Four families living in Washington D.C. have been selected to be 'climate pilots'. The households took the challenge to test and find new ways towards the goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Is it possible to live climate-smart in Washington already in 2009/2010? What are the greatest difficulties and which are easiest to change?

Climate Pilots in Washington D.C. is a project that was running eight months from July 1st 2009. The project has been a cooperation between the Swedish Embassy in Washington D.C. and the City of Kalmar in Sweden and was as well part of an exhibition at House of Sweden in Washington during fall 2009 and spring 2010.

Aim of the project
The project has aimed to help four American climate pilot households to be aware of their climate impact in different areas. The families have received coaching on how to set goals and change things in their everyday lives to achieve reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Hopefully, the Climate Pilots have served as inspiration for others and be good examples of how it is possible to combine a climate-smart lifestyle and still have a good life.

The concept of Climate Pilots was originally developed in the City of Kalmar in Sweden in 2007. You can read more about the original project under 'Background' to the left.

Four challenges
The Climate Pilot families in Washington D.C. have received four challenges during eight months from July 2009. All four challenges have been based on three steps: getting knowledge of the topic, making a survey of the current situation and finally making a change/challenge. Each challenge started with for example a physical meeting or an online web conference. The next step allowed the pilots to make some kind of reflections of their present situation and finally, the pilots received help from the Swedish coaches to set goals and make a change that can help reduce their output of carbon dioxide emissions.
