EcoDriving enables the you to:
* reduce your fuel consumption by up to 20 percent
* reduce your costs for service and maintenance
* reduce your CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent
How the EcoDriving was done with the Climate Pilots
The Climate Pilots were challenged to reduce their fuel consumption with at least 13% and all of them succeeded to reach far above. It's normal to reduce fuel consumption with 15-20% when driving a mixed route including both city and high way driving.
The Climate Pilots got individual driving slots with an instructor for 1,5 hours starting at House of Sweden in Washington DC. Two instructors, Michael Axelsson and Joakim Gudmundsen, from The Swedish National Association of Driving Schools (STR) flew to Washington to teach the Climate Pilots the driving technique.
The Climate Pilot was asked to drive a route in Georgetown (previously tested by the instructor) taking approx. 20 minutes. The Climate Pilot was asked to drive as they "normally would have driven". After 20 minutes they came back to the starting point and the instructor gave some advice and instruction on what could be improved. The instructor took over and drove and showed some techniques. After coming back to the starting point again, the Climate Pilot was once again asked to drive the same route as earlier and now apply what he or she had learnt. All of the Climate Pilots reached a reduction between 20-30 percent. One factor explaining the good result of the Climate Pilots is the fact that the driving route this day included city driving only and no high way driving.
The result
Roy Rathbun 30% less fuel consumption (20% faster driving during second route)
Isaiah Akin (& Mya Akin in backseat) 23% less fuel consumption (same speed both routes)
Nolan Stokes (and Kathy Stokes in backseat) 21% (same speed both routes)
Due to the expected snow storm coming into Washington DC that afternoon on 5 February the programme had to be comprised and the couples were given the Ecodriving at the same time. This meant that one person only could drive and the other person in the back seat.
